General well-being.
Indoor plants not only beautify your home, they also help you live a healthier life…they boost the oxygen in indoors while also reducing anxiety and symptoms of depression.
Take that AND the design benefits! The next step is to learn how best to incorporate indoor plants into your interior design.
If you follow trends, too, greenery indoors is also a growing interior design trend. According to Statista, 33.1 million U.S. households had houseplants in 2019. That’s 23.8% of the U.S. households recorded in 2019!!
This goes to show that you’re NOT alone in your desire to beautify your home with indoor plants. And, frankly, there are some added benefits that almost make indoor plants a must-have!
Here are some of them below…
Should You Consider Having Indoor Plants?
You should consider incorporating indoor plants into your home design for several simple reasons:
- You get better indoor air quality: Plants help to improve your indoor air quality because they circulate more fresh air (specifically, oxygen) around your home. You know what they say about plants emitting oxygen and consuming carbon…and shouldn’t the air you breathe at home be the healthiest?!
- Reduce stress and symptoms of anxiety: Having plants around your home can consistently boost mood, reduce stress levels and symptoms of anxiety, overall helping you feel better. This is due to the calming effect nature has on humans.
- Enjoy increased personal efficiency: When your indoor air quality is great and your stress and anxiety levels low, your more consistent good mood will affect your energy levels, motivation, and overall efficiency in everything you do!
- Added aesthetic ambiance: One undeniable benefit of indoor plants is how they immediately add aesthetic beauty to your home. Does your home look dull, unappealing, or bland? Bring a little life in…literally!!
Positioning indoor plants in your interior design can immediately change the look and feel from “blah” into an inviting, relaxing and healthy home.
But…what kind of plants?
The question NO one wants to ask…
Do fake plants count?
PRO TIP: in the interior design world, artificial plans are called “permanents.” And yes, you still get many of the benefits by using these in your interior design!!
The placebo effect does work with permanents if you want the boost in mood and overall in-home beauty…for air quality, though, try your green thumb and make the commitment for real indoor plants!!
5 Design Tips On How To Bring Plants Into Your Home
Indoor plants are a yes-yes for your interior design. But, what are the to-dos when adding plants into your interior design strategy?
Here’s how to break it down…
- Take stock of your home
- Nail down your interior design style and tailor your plant choices toward it
- Experiment with plant sizes and heights
- Plan to use your available space judiciously
- Choose the appropriate pots or displays
Step 1: Take Stock of Your Home
When adding plants into your interior design, the first thing to do is take stock of your existing design and principal spaces in need. Understand the spaces that need to be enhanced with the benefits specific to indoor greenery.
Look out for those empty, aloof places that could do with some lighting up…especially bookshelves, empty corners, dining table, bathrooms, coffee table, etc…
Step 2: Nail Your Style Down and Tailor Your Plant Choice to It!
Once you’ve taken stock of your home and design opportunities, the next thing is to pick out the right design style for your home.
Think of the outcome you want from adding greenery…how do you envision your home once all this is said and done?! Then, start thinking of plants that FIT that mental picture of your perfect look and feel…
At this point, you need to do some plant research. Get to know your plants…how care-intensive are they? Why people love them? What examples can you find of those plants used in interior design?
Draw up your shortlist of plants based on what you learn!
Step 3: Experiment with Plant Sizes and Heights
Now that you’ve researched plants and drawn up your shortlist, consider the final aesthetic experience you want for your home…for you AND your family or visitors.
Ensure that your eventual choice of plants is varied in size and height. This helps enhance the aesthetic outcome and gives you greater flexibility to move things around in the future.
Step 4: Plan to Use Space Judiciously
When adding indoor plants (or ANY new design selections), never make the mistake of adding so much that a space looks cluttered. Even if you’re bringing plants IN to make your home look fuller and more lived-in, there’s no need to over-do it!
Don’t end up with a situation where plants are competing with humans for space in your home, for instance…OR where they’re within toddlers’ reach.
The way to do that? Ensure no greenery additions interfere with foot traffic OR with everyday life.
Step 5: Choose the Appropriate Pots or Displays
Whether it’s a pot or planter box, you want to ensure that your plant container is in tune with your home’s overall interior design. That means finishes, textures AND colors!
You also want to ENSURE that each pot or planter box is big enough to hold the recommended soil for your plants…one of the most common mistakes is potting plants in containers that are TOO SMALL.
In essence, each container must be big enough to allow your plants to breathe and thrive.
Lastly, you want to really learn about plant care—including SPECIFIC care instructions for your greenery selections—BEFORE you bring plants into your home. Never include plants in your interior design if you won’t have time to care for those plants…because a DEAD or DYING plant will have an even greater (and completely off-putting) impact on your interior design.
